The
third episode for the social and emotional learning series introduces the
idea of a growth mindset through a very familiar Aesop fable. We all know why
Tortoise won the race, but why did he join the race he was bound to lose?
Students are introduced to the adverb ‘yet’ and its meaning and power in
changing attitudes towards challenges and obstacles. The two pot plants in
the episode illustrate the nurturing and growth of mindsets, and the
‘language switch strategy’ provides students with skills in applying the word
‘yet’ in real-life events. The learning experiences of two juggling learners
also showcase the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset and a
bigger difference in the outcomes of skills learning. Use the episode with a
unit on the perfect tense or adverbs alongside any story that promotes the
development of a growth mindset.
